Artificers Guild bronze bowl

Description

A bronze bowl designed by Edward Spencer and made by the Artificers’ Guild, circa 1920.

The bowl is marked with Edward Spencer’s personal mark that was used on pieces made by the Artificers’ Guild. The underside is also stamped with “939” which is most likely a design number.

The bowl is lightly planished and the base/stand has four elaborately designed legs that are heavily influenced by Japanese or Aesthetic Movement designs.

I have not attempted to clean or polish this bowl in any way. I’m working on the basis that, if you make a bowl out of bronze, you would probably hope that it looked like this one day with a lovely mix of painted bronze and verdigris.

This wouldn’t look out of place in an ancient Japanese temple.
