A pair of Newton School copper trays

Description

A pair of copper trays made by the Newton School of Metal Work, circa 1910.

The trays have a very attractive mirrored repousse design with griffins and mythical beasts around a a central tree. The edge of the tray has punched decoration which was commonly used by the School. This particular design can be seen in a photograph of the School’s stand at the 1913 Home Arts and Industries Association exhibition held in the Royal Albert Hall.

The trays are in lovely condition and match extremely well. The design is most likely by John Williams.
