Barnstaple Guild copper sconce back

Description

A copper sconce back attributed to the Barnstaple Guild of Metalworkers. The sconce has a lovely repousse design and the motto “Lucem Spero” which translates to “I hope for light”. This was most likely attached to a wooden candle sconce at some point in the past.

The back of the sconce is signed “Andrew Freeman Dec 31st 1912”. Unfortunately I have not been able to find anything out about this maker. The attribution to the Barnstaple Guild is based on the similarity to the design of a sconce design by Frank Braddon and shown in the Arts & Crafts Magazine, 1904.
