Gordon Russell octagonal bronze bowl

Description

A stunning bronze bowl by Gordon Russell for his Lygon metalwork range, circa 1920.

The large octagonal bowl sits on a circular base and is extremely elegant and well made as you would expect from Gordon Russell.

The bowl is fully marked with “R&S” for Russell & Sons, “Lygon” and “Made by Hand on the Cotswold Hills”. A sports trophy with a similar octagonal bowl and designed by Gordon Russell was illustrated in The Studio periodical in 1924.

Much of the Lygon range was made in the Chipping Campden workshop of George Hart, Harts Silversmiths. Harts Silversmiths is still operated today by George’s descendants and they still have the original “Lygon” stamps.

This is the first example of this bowl by Gordon Russell that I have seen in many years of collecting his metalwork.
