Liberty & Co "Groefa" copper candle sconce

Description

A copper candle sconce retailed by Liberty & Co, circa 1905.

This particular candle sconce was called the “Groefa” and was illustrated in the Liberty & Co Yuletide catalogue from 1903-1904. It is quite a simple design with a hammered finish and a heart shaped repousse pattern on the back plate. It seems to a be a simplified version of a design by W. J Neatby which was illustrated in The Art Workers Quarterly in 1903.

When I found this sconce it was missing the candle holder and drip pan. These have been made up by a talented metalworker to match the image from the Yuletide catalogue and the piece restored to its former glory.
