Richard Llewellyn Rathbone lidded copper box
Description
A copper box and lid made by Richard Llewellyn Rathbone in 1897.
This is a very rare piece by the master craftsman, Richard Llewellyn Rathbone. I’ve admired his work for many years and marked pieces like this are now hard to find. The hand planished box has been raised out of a single piece of copper with shaped, lobed sides. The lid has been decorated with simple punched decoration typical of Rathbone’s work. The underside is dated “1897” along with the makers mark “Rathbone” and the design number “629”.
In good condition with only very minor bumps around the edges of the lid. The patina on the box and lid are slightly different but I just can’t bring myself to polish up the original patina. As you would expect, the lid fits perfectly.
A very similar design was illustrated in The Artist in 1896 in a short article about Rathbone’s work (Image attached).
