Walter J. West silver plated hot water jug
Description
A silver plated hot water jug made by Walter James West, circa 1915.
A beautifully designed and executed repousse silver plate on copper hot water jug by the Birmingham based metalworker, Walter West. West was trained at the Margaret Street School of Art in Birmingham where he went on to become a teacher of metalwork around 1911 -1914. His designs start to appear in The Studio as early as 1909 and he exhibited at the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society exhibition in 1916.
This specific design of hot water jug was illustrated in The Studio when it was entered into the National Competition of Schools of Art in 1914. The article stated that “interesting pieces were to be found here and there among the exhibits; as, for example, a silver hot water jug with a design of grapes in repousse, by Mr. Walter J. West of Birmingham (Margaret Street)“
The quality of the jug is exceptional. The repousse decoration of vines around the top of the jug is very crisp and there are nice details in repousse around the base of the jug and the edge of the lid. The jug has a subtle planished finish.
