Item 453

Newton School of Metal Work brass dish

Description

A brass dish with repousse griffin decoration made by the Newton School of Metal Work, circa 1900.

I am constantly amazed by the variation in the metalwork made by the Newton Class. The repousse griffin pattern for this particular piece appears in the Newton School design archive. The repousse work and the background hammering are quite different to other pieces made by the School  although the “pie crust” edge is very typical of their work. My feeling is that this particular piece is quite early, dating to pre-1900 and I am not at all sure who the designer was. It may stem from a family crest.

I guess the variety is to be expected for a School who had multiple design inputs and continued to operate for nearly 50 years!
