William Thomas Pavitt brass candlesticks
Description
A stunning pair of hammered brass candlesticks made by William Thomas Pavitt, circa 1903.
Probably the best example of Arts and Crafts candlesticks I have been lucky enough to find. The candlesticks are beautifully proportioned and very simply constructed of a heavy gauge of brass. The base and the top sconces are connected by three tapering legs. The candlesticks are lightly planished all over and use rivets for all joints.
Although unmarked, the candlesticks are well documented and important. This particular design was exhibited at the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society exhibition in 1903. The exhibition catalogue tells us they were made by W. T. Pavitt and exhibited by R. LL. B. Rathbone and Co. Thankfully the candlesticks were illustrated in the Art Workers Quarterly that same year in a review of the exhibition. I have written a brief article about William Thomas Pavitt and his connection to the Arts and Crafts Movement in Liverpool and London plus his association with other well known designers and craftsmen such as Richard Llewellyn Rathbone, Harold Stabler and Alfred Hughes.
