Item 423

Newlyn Class copper inkwell

Description

A copper inkwell by the Newlyn Industrial Class, circa 1900.

A nice example of an early inkwell made by the Newlyn. Industrial Class. The inkwell has a repeating repousse pattern of fish amongst weeds to the base.. The body of the inkwell is riveted to the base and also has repousse decoration of waves and mythical creatures. .This type of inkwell was commonly made by the Newlyn Class and although, like many of the early pieces made by the Class, it is unmarked, there is no doubt it is a Newlyn piece.

This is a really good example in great condition and with a lovely even patina. It would originally have had a glass or ceramic inkwell which is now sadly missing.
