Item 437

James Smithies copper charger

Description

A small copper charger with repousse galleon design attributed to James Smithies, circa 1905.

One of the nicest small chargers I have seen in a long time. The central design is of a galleon in full sail and the edges of the charger have a repeating shell pattern. The charger has a small paper label to the back stating it is by James Smithies and I have no reason to doubt that it is correct. The charger is extremely well made and in the style of early designs by Smithies. He is known to have used the shell design on pieces including a fire kerb which was illustrated in The Studio in 1895.

This piece is made of a good gauge of copper and displays beautifully.
