Duchess of Sutherland Cripples Guild Cromwellian bowl
Description
A silver two handled “Cromwellian” bowl made by the Duchess of Sutherland Cripples Guild in 1912.
Almost certainly based on a historical design for a wine taster or sweetmeat dish from the time of Oliver Cromwell and Charles the 1st or 2nd. It is a light gauge of silver with fantastic repousse and punched decoration. This piece appears in the showroom catalogue (No.523), circa 1910. This design number has been inscribed faintly on the base of the bowl along with other stock marks.
Fully hallmarked for Millicent Sutherland, Birmingham, 1912. It is also stamped with the D.S.C.G. makers mark.
