Norman and Ernest Spittle copper door plate

Description

A single copper door plate designed and made by Norman and Ernest Spittle, circa 1905.

This door plate is on the larger size and would have adorned a very grand house at some point in time.  It has a hand hammered finish plus pierced and shaped decoration to the tops, bottoms and sides. Norman Spittle designed many pieces with grotesque and strange figures prior to his death in 1902. I believe this is one of his early designs.

This particular design (No. 224) appears in the Norman and Ernest Spittle catalogue which dates to around 1905. It also appears in the Art Fittings Limited catalogue from the same period.
