Liberty & Co copper galleon charger

Description

A superb large scale copper charger retailed by Liberty & Co, circa 1900.

This particular copper charger, albeit with the mirror image design, is pictured in the book “Liberty’s Furniture, 1875-1915, The birth of modern interior design” written by Daryl Bennett. It appears on page 145 and was in the Liberty & Co handbook of sketches, 1900, Page 105. The charger has “Liberty Copus” written across it which translates as Liberty Cup.

This is one of the largest and most impressive chargers that I have been lucky enough to own. The repousse work is excellent with a stunning galleon in full sail with a lot of rich detail. Liberty & Co very rarely credited the designers and makers of their metalwork so I am unable to attribute a particular maker.
