Newton School copper jug

Description

A copper jug made by the Newton School of Metal Work, circa 1910.

The jug has a repeating hearts pattern in repousse around the tapering body and a nicely shaped handle and spout. This design appeared in a photograph of the Newton School workers which is believed to date from 1925. However an earlier version of this design appears in The Building News in 1907 (image attached) and was exhibited at that years Home Arts and Industries Association exhibition at the Royal Albert Hall.

The hearts design appears in the Newton School design archive but is unsigned. based on the overall style of the piece my feeling is that this may have been designed by George S. Tanner for the School between 1897 and 1907.

This particular jug is in very nice condition overall with a lovely even patina.
